The Diocese of Joliet suspends Masses this weekend

La diócesis de Joliet suspende las misas de este fin de semana

The Diocese of Joliet has suspended the mass schedule for this weekend in all diocesan churches and has made other changes to the liturgy with immediate effect.

The directives arrived in a press release on Friday afternoon from Bishop Richard Pates. It is in response to what is now the coronavirus pandemic.

"The emergence of the pandemic coronavirus requires us to take the necessary, even painful, measures to stop the spread of this disease and ultimately return to our normal lifestyle," Pates said in the news release.

“I realize that some of the adaptations are difficult for us in view of the great meaning of our prayer life. But they are carried out in the interest of the common good, which ultimately benefits us as individuals and as communities. Your cooperation with them is highly appreciated and valued.

“In light of the directives offered by the state, I am ordering the suspension of regular weekend mass services in the Diocese of Joliet for the weekend of March 14-15, 2020. Exceptions can be made for weddings, funerals and confirmations, as long as the guidelines issued by the state of Illinois, which limit participation to no more than 250 people, are observed. For future weekends, we will consider whether additional steps need to be taken as we move forward. ”

Pates also made some changes to the liturgies for the Diocese of Joliet that are effective immediately and will be in effect indefinitely.

• The dispensation of the Sunday Mass obligation is effective immediately.

• The reception of Holy Communion should only be at hand ... the reception in the language is temporarily suspended.

• The reception of the Precious Blood (wine) is suspended.

• The exchange of peace must be expressed verbally. In addition, the practice of holding hands during the saying of "Our Father" is also suspended.

• Holy Water fountains should be emptied and not refilled again. Parishes can make holy water available in containers with which parishioners can fill their own bottles.

"I encourage everyone at this time to intensify the Lenten practices of fasting, prayer, and almsgiving," Pates said in the statement. "Those who are dealing with the coronavirus should remain at home and, as is usual for all who are ill, should give priority to recovery from the disease and not participate in church services at this time."

All churches in the Daily Journal coverage area are in the Diocese of Joliet.

The Diocese also said it will close all schools until further notice, beginning Monday. It applies to all Catholic schools, religious education, and youth ministry programs.
