Branches cover a vehicle along West Jeffery Street in Kankakee on Sunday evening following a strong thunderstorm with high winds that caused tree damage and region-wide power outages.

A storm packed with wind gusts of 70 mph socked the Kankakee area on Sunday afternoon.

A hot, muggy day with temperatures of 90-plus degrees and a dew point of 70 degrees was knocked out by a swift moving storm, lowering the temperature to 70 degrees in a short period of time.

Power crews and public works departments were busy with downed power lines and trees and branches brought down.

A trained weather spotter recorded a 74 mph wind gust in Manteno at 2:55 p.m.
