HERSCHER — Matt Perreault farms 1,300 acres of corn, soybeans and wheat with his father in the Irwin to Herscher area.

Normally at this point of spring, young shoots of green corn are flapping in the wind and soybeans are emerging from the soil.

Perreault, 29, a 2008 graduate of Central High School and a 2012 graduate of the University of Illinois, has a grand total of 53 acres of corn planted. He had been planning on planting about 700 acres of corn.

And with rain still in the forecast, Perreault, and his father, Bret, are not likely to get any seed in the ground as the window ...
