Watseka talks sales tax hike

Watseka habla aumento de impuestos a las ventas

WATSEKA — The Watseka City Council is exploring the idea of increasing its sales tax rate from 0.75 percent to 2 percent.

Much like the Kankakee City Council — which approved a 2 percentage point increase to its sales tax rate, raising it to a total rate of 8.25 percent — the move is simply seen as a way to raise extra money without hitting property owners directly through property taxes.

Neither Mayor John Allhands nor Ald. Mark Garfield stated when this matter could come before the eight-member city council. However, there will be a public meeting at 7 p.m. Monday at the Watseka City Council chambers to hear from residents on this concept.
