Study: Local schools get short end of stick

KANKAKEE — Taxpayers in towns such as Kankakee, Bradley and Bourbonnais are subsidizing teacher pensions in far wealthier places, a nonprofit group's study shows.

Despite the research, both Democratic and Republican politicians, including Rep. Lindsay Parkhurst, R-Kankakee, support the state's system of funding teacher pensions.

In Illinois, the state pays for the employer's share of teacher pensions for every district but Chicago. The amounts of those pensions are largely influenced by how much teachers make during their final working years.
